EL MORRO VALLEY RANCH is operated by Charles Mallery and Rebecca Allina. Located in the Zuni mountains of Cibola County on the south and west slopes of the continental divide near El Morro National Monument, the ranch encompasses over 20,000 acres of grazing land. Winter ranges are at 7500 ft with the summer ranges in the national forest up to nearly 9000 ft. There is no irrigated ground although there are some naturally sub-irrigated pastures. Currently the ranch runs about 150 Black Angus and Hereford /Angus cross mother cows and some stockers. We market stockers and finished cattle and sell a limited amount of retail beef. EL MORRO VALLEY RANCH became certified organic in the summer of 2009 and became GAP certified in 2011. EL MORRO VALLEY RANCH is committed to sustainable ranching practices, humane animal treatment and raising healthy, quality beef. We are honored to be a part of the “food revolution” and we are working to develop regional food systems.
Charles Mallery has been working in cow/calf operations since 1972, and began his own cow/calf operation in 1976. He has also worked as a professional artist and general contractor as a builder of custom adobe homes. Prior to ranching he studied art and biology at Stanford University in CA. He worked as a wildlife biologist for the Peace Corps in Ethiopia doing ecological studies. During that time he established the first national park (Rift Valley Lakes) in Ethiopia. Charlie is a native of the Zuni mountains in New Mexico.
Rebecca Allina has a MA in education and has been a teacher in the Peace Corps in Iran. She worked as a Medical Assistant, managed a medical office and taught at a community college. She has facilitated health retreats, established a health foundation, been a hospice counselor and volunteered for an international health organization. She moved to New Mexico with her dog, Annie in 2008, where they both discovered that they really liked cows and Charlie.
El Morro Valley Ranch joined the Sweet Grass Coop in 2012.
